ensembleNEWSRQ strives to manifest the creativity of the current generation and inspire audiences to participate in musical culture in a profound way, through high-level curated concert experiences that sustain and transform the relevance of contemporary classical music.
Innovative new music collective ensembleNewSRQ (enSRQ) announces their 2021/2022 Season, ‘Season Six’, with five concerts of commissions, premieres and new works presented to live audiences and available for streaming.
The 21/22 season sees a record 4 premieres of commissioned works (from Max Grafe, Elizabeth A. Baker, Sebastian Currier, and Tyson J. Davis), new collaborations (with Chroma Trio & ensemble vim) and old friends (Conor Hanick, Han Chen, Nina C. Young, and Andreia Pinto Correia). Also in store is a two-work season bookending exploration of the young composer, Yaz Lancaster, the culmination of enSRQ’s multi-season exploration of French Spectralism, and special projects along the way in addition to the subscription series (including an evening of new opera and book readings with Matt Aucoin).
Co-Artistic Director and violinist Samantha Bennett is particularly excited to bring these premieres to a larger audience this season. “We cannot wait to see all your smiling faces, and to play for you- the part that has been missing for us for too long.” Bennett says. “The silver-lining of the pandemic for us has been an accelerated push towards truly high quality video and audio recording capabilities, something that we will continue to use well after the return of live audiences. Despite the difficulties of last season, we’re proud of how we have responded to the pandemic and grown since March of 2020. We have become a stronger, more diverse and more innovative organization, and we’re excited for what’s in store.”
Details about time, dates and venues can be found on www.ensrq.org. Tickets are $25 for in-person single tickets, $10 for single concert streaming access, or $115 for a Season Pass that includes both live tickets and streaming access. More information on ticket packages, including student ticket pricing, available on the website. Streaming access will be via www.ensrq.org.
SUN COLORS celebrates the warmth and diversity of contemporary string writing, with music of Reena Esmail, Michael Djupstrom, Jessica Meyer, and Tan Dun. Building up in instrumentation from one solo violin, to duo, trio and finally full quartet, the works on this program take inspiration from poetry, folk song and the sun's ever unifying and life-giving presence.
Continuing our journey into French spectral music, NIGHTFALL! opens with Grisey's Stele for two percussionists. The Florida Premiere of Dave Maric's Nascent Forms (an enSRQ Co-Commission) precedes David T. LIttle's Haunt of Last Nightfall, a striking and provocative 'ghost play' for four percussionists and electronics, remembering the 1981 El Mozote massacre in El Salvador.
enSRQ's First LiveStreamed Concert of the 2020/21 Season featuring Samantha Bennett and George Nickson performing duo works for violin and percussion. Program to include music of Nico Muhly, Tania Leon, Kevin Day, Katherine Balch, and Shaun Tilburg.
A conversation with composer Nina C. Young and ensemblenewSRQ's ReStreamed performances of her work, Rising Tide, and Krzysztof Penderecki's Sextet. Filmed in Sarasota, Florida.
Kyle Brightwell (Boston Symphony) and George Nickson (Dallas Symphony) perform Ryan Streber's two to one. Filmed during COVID-19 Quarantine in Sarasota, FL.
A discussion of Wuorinen's music and a recording of ensemblenewSRQ's live performance of New York Notes from April 2017 in Sarasota, FL.
